The school

The International School of Mime and Physical Theater Nouveau Colombier is notable for being the first school in the world that works with three of the twentieth century most important currents of Mime and Physical Theater: the pedagogies of Marcel Marceau, Etienne Decroux and Jacques Lecoq.

The School focuses on training interested in Pantomime, Mask, Physical Theatre and other performance and acting languages related to the universe of physical theater, clown, dance, performance art, creation or poetic theatre.

Nouveau Colombier is run by José Piris, one of the most famous Spanish disciples of Marcel Marceau. Stage director and actor in many plays since 1992, José Piris also ran the International Theatre company Mimox Teatro and worked as a teacher of Mime and Pantomime in renowned academies such as the RESAD (Royal School for Dramatic Arts), in Performing Arts at Nebrija University, in Escénica Artística (School of Performing Arts in Andalucía), the ESADT (Theatre School of Torrelodones attached to the School of Arts at the University of Kent, Canterbury).

All teachers at Nouveau Colombier are Marcel Marceau´s disciples and most of them were personally taught by this master of mime at the International School of Mimodrame in Paris. They have been trained for years in the disciplines of Etiénne Decroux´s – the father of modern mime- corporeal mime, and are tireless researchers of the maskwork and the physical theater, both of them based on the work of the master teacher Jacques Lecoq. The knowledge acquired by the teaching staff throughout their career is also used in the training of the participants.

Nouveau Colombier provides academic training also on other disciplines such as Suzuki Method, Viewpoints, multiple dance styles and a structured methodology based on different theatrical philosophies of creating and acting.

It is the aim of the school to train an actor-creator, a performer able to expressively work with his body, dominating its plasticity and movement, capable of creating his own performances either from an individual or collective idea.

The pedagogy of the school is aimed at professionals who want to broad their corporal and expressive techniques and to acquire a body discipline in order to address the various theatrical styles and codes.

The academic work focuses on the training of a corporeal actor able to work with his imagination, with the magical lyricism of movement, able to use his whole body as an expressive instrument; a performer that recognizes the beauty of metaphor, of the principles of metamorphosis and of the poetic attribute in images.

In order to achieve this goal, the training at Nouveau Colombier lasts two academic years and a third one to delve into the acquired knowledge; a twenty-first century way of teaching, with a personalized follow-up of each student, with continuous assessment and regular tutorials, giving the students the chance to approach professional environments and to take part in exhibitions, festivals and theatre performances.

Nouveau Colombier is a school that promotes creative atmosphere, passion and respect for the theatre and its metaphorical universe being the only European school that inherits Marcel Marceau’s art of mimodrame and aimed at practitioners who want to be an actor with the body of an athlete and the heart of a poet, able to inhabit their artistic body and soul.
